Tampa Now Florida's third largest city with the nation's eleventh largest port, Tampa started as a small Indian fishing village. Tampa is an Indian word meaning "sticks of fire". José Gaspar was a daring Spanish pirate whose headquarters were said to be Gasparilla Island near Tampa. In the 1820s he jumped from his ship while in battle and disappeared. Every February in Tampa we have the Gasparilla Pirate Invasion. "Gasparilla" and his buccaneers storm into Tampa Bay and invade the city from their pirate ship. The Bay is filled with boats and the shores are lined with people greeting the "pirates". It is a two day street party and festival sometimes compared to Mardi Gras. Tampa is famous for cigar making. By the mid-1800s, the railroad reached Tampa, making it possible to move cigar factories here. Don Vincente Martinez Ybor was the first to move his operation to a spot east of Tampa. Others followed and in its heyday, Ybor City had over 200 cigar factories. Ybor City today is a historic landmark district and is famous for the nightlife. In 1898, Teddy Roosevelt and the US Army departed to Cuba in the Spanish-American War from Tampa. He and his Rough Riders camped on the land that today is The Pavillions at Ballast Point. They sailed out of Port Tampa.
Emelia Chapin developed the land at Ballast Point, which in the early 1900s was the end of the trolley line. The Ballast Point Pavilion housed a theater, restaurant, park, and even a zoo. The Ballast Point Pavilion became Tampa's social and recreational center of the time. The great hurricane of 1921 all but destroyed the Pavilion. Although they began to rebuild, it burned in 1922. A new pavilion and pier were built in 1925. The area is now a city park with fishing and picnic areas. Today Tampa is home to Bayshore Boulevard, the world's longest continuous sidewalk. Stretching from South Tampa to downtown, it is host to countless joggers, cyclists, roller bladers, baby walkers, and people just wanting a stroll with a beautiful view. Tampa is a natural for enjoyment of the outdoors. Water sports are popular due to the nearby beaches and rivers. Winters are typically very mild, with only a few short lived cold spells. Summers are hot and humid, though the afternoon showers and Gulf breezes keep the heat bearable. |
